Globalstar, the satellite solutions provider that supplies Apple with infrastructure for its Emergency SOS and Roadside Assistance services, announced today its intentions to improve its infrastructure thanks to significant investments from Apple.
In a new filing with the SEC, Globalstar has agreed on various improvements for Apple’s satellite demands. This includes a new satellite constellation, expanded ground infrastructure, and increased global licensing of new satellite services. In return for these improvements, Apple will pay Globalstar $1.1 billion to support the construction and deployment of the new satellites. The Cupertino company will also purchase $400 million of equity interest worth 20 percent of Globalstar.
Apple first supported satellite connectivity with the iPhone 14 launch in 2022 with the Emergency SOS via satellite feature. The company has steadily expanded its satellite-based services that allow users to access life-saving features in areas with no Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. This includes Roadside Assistance, Find My, and non-emergency iMessage and SMS texting.

The expansion of Apple’s satellite services means that Globalstar’s satellites are in more demand than ever. Both companies have to ensure that the satellite capacity can match the increasing demand, particularly in life-threatening situations. More satellites mean that Apple can expand its features to more regions, which are currently limited to about 17 countries.
