Apple is rumored to expand the LTPO OLED display technology to non-Pro iPhone 17 models when the lineup launches next year. This could expand ProMotion beyond Pro iPhone devices, according to a new report from the South Korean-based ET News.
Per the report, Samsung Display and LG Display will supply new LTPO panels for Apple designated for the iPhone 17 and the mysterious “iPhone 17 Slim” as the technology won’t be limited to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. LTPO, or Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Oxide, is a technology that allows a panel to adjust its refresh rate without significant impact on power consumption.
While it is not explicitly mentioned in ET News‘s report, expanding LTPO could allow for the non-Pro iPhone 17 devices to include the ProMotion variable refresh rate feature. The change could also mean that Apple will no longer supply OLED panels from Chinese vendors, as these are limited to LTPS technology with no LTPO manufacturing capabilities.

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max were the first iPhone models to feature ProMotion in 2021. This allowed the devices to variably adjust their screen’s refresh rates between 10Hz and 120Hz. Apple upgraded ProMotion one year with the iPhone 14 Pro, allowing it to reach a new minimum of 1Hz. This paved the way for the Always-on Display when the device is locked.
Apple has come under criticism for releasing the base iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus with 60Hz panels, despite many Android devices of similar specs and prices fully adopting 120Hz displays.
