With the iOS 18.2 beta 2 that Apple released today, the company is enabling a new feature for the iPhone 16’s Camera Control – exposure and focus locking.
Apple promised the feature would be available in a future software update during the iPhone 16’s event in September. With this feature, users can lightly press and hold on Camera Control to lock focus and exposure on a subject in the camera’s viewfinder, before a deeper press to trigger the shutter.
The new feature is not enabled by default in the iOS 18.2 beta, but it can be turned on from the Camera Control options menu in the Settings app. Like a traditional two-step shutter button, Camera Control locks focus and exposure as long as the user is holding down and is released once the button is no longer being pressed.

Focus and exposure lock isn’t the only new Camera Control feature coming soon. In the first iOS 18.2 beta, Apple enabled Visual Intelligence, an exclusive Apple Intelligence feature to the iPhone 16 lineup. Using Camera Control, iPhone 16 users can point their device’s camera at objects in their environment to learn more about them through ChatGPT and Google Images search.
