Apple is unlikely to upgrade AirPods Max with any major upgrades soon as the over-the-ear headphones continue to post lackluster sales, according to a new report from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
In the subscribers-only Q&A section of the weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple has “no concrete plans” as of today to release a true successor to the AirPods Max. Sales of the headphones reportedly don’t justify additional development resources, and as such they’re expected to remain unchanged “for the foreseeable future.”
Apple refreshed the AirPods Max in September during the iPhone 16 event with a USB-C port instead of Lightning and a range of new colorways. However, the headphones still have the old H1 audio processing chip the company first released in 2019 as the rest of the AirPods lineup has been updated with the H2 chip.
