The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max are rumored to introduce massive design changes to the Pro iPhone lineup by switching away from a titanium chassis for a glass-aluminum hybrid one, according to a new report from The Information.
Per the report, the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature an aluminum chassis, including the iPhone 17 Pro. The company seems ready to move on from the titanium housing introduced just two years ago with the iPhone 15 Pro. This also means that the Pro and non-Pro iPhone models will share the same materials for the first time since the iPhone 11 Pro’s introduction in 2019.
To this effect, Apple is said to be testing a new glass-aluminum hybrid housing for the iPhone 17 Pro as part of “significant design changes.” The top half of the device’s back will reportedly be made from aluminum, while the bottom half will continue to be made from glass for wireless charging support. While the device’s back will feature two materials, the frame surrounding the iPhone 17 Pro will be entirely aluminum-based.

Most iPhone models Apple has released feature a single-material back, except for the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5S. Both devices featured a primarily aluminum back, with two glass windows at the top and bottom for wireless transmission as radio waves can’t travel as well through metal.
The iPhone 17 Pro’s camera bump could also receive a design change, with The Information reporting a rectangular bump made from aluminum instead of 3D glass. This will represent another major design departure for Pro iPhones, as the camera bump’s design has remained mostly intact since the iPhone 11 Pro.
The iPhone 17 lineup is around 10 months away from its reveal, and Apple still has time to change design elements by then. In all cases, the iPhone 17 lineup is shaping up to be a massive overhaul for the device from a design perspective, including the rumored “iPhone 17 Slim” with its razor-thin sub-6mm design.
