Apple has begun early work on a new smart doorbell that would use Face ID to unlock the door for owners and authorized residents by scanning their faces, writes Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman for the latest edition of the Power On newsletter.
Apple is working on several smart home devices, including a potential camera and a display-equipped HomePod, and a new device has joined the rumor mill today. Per the newsletter, the company is considering a smart doorbell with Face ID that would integrate wirelessly with HomeKIt deadbolt locks. Residents would have their faces scanned via Apple’s doorbell and Face ID before automatically unlocking the house.
Apple appears to be developing the smart doorbell with Face ID, but the actual lock would have to be purchased separately from HomeKit-enabled providers. With the planned device, Apple aims to compete with other home security providers like Google Nest and Amazon Ring. Work on the Face ID doorbell remains in the early stages, the newsletter adds, with the device not expected to hit the market before the end of 2025 at the earliest.

The smart doorbell is also expected to make use of Apple’s ‘Proxima’ chip, the company’s first in-house Wi-Fi chip slated to make its way on the iPhone and other products as soon as next year. The new chip will give the rumored doorbell a competitive edge over other home security devices.
The device would be one of many smart home gadgets Apple has in store as it renews its hardware push into this category. The company has several other products that are likely to be released before the smart doorbell, including a display-equipped HomePod that would act as a smart home hub for next year. A smart home camera is also rumored to be in the works, though that device isn’t expected to be available until 2026.
