The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to bring in notable camera improvements across the board with one marginal setback, according to a new report from a Weibo-based leaker.
“Digital Chat Station” claims in a new post that the iPhone 17 Pro will feature a triple 48-megapixel camera system thanks to an upgrade to the telephoto lens. Currently, both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max feature a 12MP tetraprism telephoto lens that will see an upgrade to a bigger 48MP sensor later this year.
The telephoto lens won’t be the only camera to see a sensor upgrade on the iPhone 17 Pro. The leaker goes on to mention that the front-facing camera will see a big upgrade from a 12MP sensor to a 24MP one, corroborating earlier rumors. This will be a significant change for the front-facing camera, which has remained at 12 megapixels since the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro.

On the other hand, the iPhone 17 Pro’s main camera could see a slight regression in the form of a smaller sensor. The leaker claims that the device will feature a 48MP 1/1.3-inch sensor, somewhat smaller than the iPhone 16 Pro’s 1/1.28-inch sensor. While the difference is likely to be negligible in most real-life scenarios, the change is nevertheless unexpected since Apple was rumored to adopt the larger IMX903 sensor from Sony which measures 1/1.14 inches.
The iPhone 17 series is expected to debut later this September. The lineup could usher in one of the biggest changes to the iPhone in some time thanks to the all-new ‘iPhone 17 Slim‘ model intended to replace the Plus range alongside significant design changes for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
