Apple plans to upgrade the Mac Studio with the M4 family of chips during the first half of 2025 while a similar Mac Pro refresh will have to wait, according to a new report from Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
In the weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman outlines his expectations for Mac hardware upgrades throughout this year. Alongside the M4 MacBook Air which could debut soon, Apple has a few upgrades in store for the Mac Studio and Mac Pro. The company’s top-end desktop models have not received an upgrade in a few years, but that could finally change in 2025.
The report expects Apple to refresh the Mac Studio first by June 2025 with the M4 generation. The upgraded desktop will feature the M4 Max chip from the new MacBook Pro, as well as the M4 Ultra processor that Apple is yet to unveil. As reported earlier, the M4 Mac Studio was set to be announced with the M4 MacBook Air early in the year, but Apple delayed its launch for unknown reasons.

Down the line, Apple is expected to upgrade the Mac Pro before the year’s end. Apple’s highest-end desktop will feature the M4 Ultra chip, also codenamed ‘Hidra.’ Beyond the specifications upgrade, the M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro are expected to retain their current design and price point.
With the M4 Mac Studio and Mac Pro unveil, the entire Mac lineup will be powered by the M4 generation. Beyond this, the first products with the M5 chip should be released towards the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026, including a new MacBook Pro, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro 2.
