Apple plans to upgrade a few iPad models over the next several months, and the new iPad Air could feature the same M4 chip from the iPad Pro, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
Apple is widely understood to have several updates planned for the iPad lineup during early 2025, with most of these upgrades focusing on performance improvements. After updating the iPad mini with the A17 Pro chip and Apple Intelligence support late last year, the company is expected to make similar changes to the entry-level iPad, a significant upgrade from the current model’s A14 Bionic processor.
On the iPad Air side, the new iteration could sport the M4 chip from the iPad Pro and recent Mac models. This should nicely improve the device’s general performance, bringing it closer to the high-end iPad Pro, though Apple could stick with a binned M4 configuration with fewer CPU and GPU cores to maintain the former’s $599 starting price.

Looking beyond the iPad and iPad Air, Apple is unlikely to release a new iPad Pro model anytime soon. The high-end iPad received a significant upgrade last year with an OLED display, ultra-thin chassis, and the M4 chip, and it could be a while before a new model is released. Apple is waiting for the M5 chip to be ready before updating the iPad Pro, and Bloomberg‘s report indicate that this should be the case between late 2025 and early 2026.
Alongside the new iPad models, Apple is working on a new lower-end Magic Keyboard for the iPad Air that should be unveiled with the new tablets over the next few months.
