iOS 18.3 is approaching its public release as Apple just seeded the Release Candidate build to developers today. With the update, Apple Intelligence will be turned on by default as per the official release notes made available today.
Apple says that “Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding” when updating to the iOS 18.3 update. This is contrast to the behavior seen with the iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2 updates, in which users who wanted to use Apple Intelligence had to navigate to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri to turn on the AI features after joining a waitlist.
For users new or upgrading to iOS 18.3, Apple Intelligence will be enabled automatically during iPhone onboarding. Users will have access to Apple Intelligence features after setting up their devices. To disable Apple Intelligence, users will need to navigate to the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane and turn off the Apple Intelligence toggle. This will disable Apple Intelligence features on their device.

The change comes as Apple has rapidly expanded the available features and regions of Apple Intelligence. Most of the features the company has shown during WWDC 2023 are now available on the devices compatible with Apple Intelligence. The notable exception to this is the all-new Siri with onscreen awareness and precise in-app controls, which is set to be available with iOS 18.4 in the coming months.
While iOS 18.3 does not introduce new Apple Intelligence features, it nevertheless brings notable enhancements across the board. This includes improvements to notifications summaries, with italicized text now used to distinguish summarized notifications from unchanged ones. Visual Intelligence on the iPhone 16 lineup can now recognize plants and animals, in addition to calendar events creation when recognizing posters or flyers with relevant information.
Apple Intelligence will also be turned on by default on the iPadOS 15.3 and macOS Sequoia 15.3 updates. On the Mac side, Genmoji creation will be available on after being limited to iPadOS and iOS.
