Reddit has been embroiled in recent controversy, as the platform is ready to implement new API pricing changes that effectively price out most developers of creating third-party Reddit clients.
Chrisitan Selig, the developer behind the famous Reddit client Apollo, was the first to point out Reddit’s outrageous API pricing. Selig estimated that it would cost him over $20 million a year to keep Apollo running. Due to this, Selig was forced to shut down Apollo – which got a rare shoutout from Apple’s Craig FederighiCraig Federighi is Apple's SVP of Software Engineering during WWDC’s keynote – effective June 30.
The infamous changes forced many subreddits to protest against Reddit’s leadership, sparking a platform-wide blackout that saw many subreddits going private and thus inaccessible for 48 hours. The outage is estimated to have affected no less than 8,000 subreddits, with many continuing their blackout indefinitely.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman refuses to back down from the platform’s planned API changes. In an internal memo sent out to Reddit employees and seen by The Verge, Huffman is doubling-down on his position, refusing to plead with dissidents and promising that the ongoing blackout will pass sooner than later.
