Apple is rumored yet again to expand the new 5x telephoto lens to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro next year as Largan struggles to manufacture enough tetraprism lens units to meet the demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max, according to Ming-Chi Kuo in a new post today.
In a new Medium post, Kuo states that Largan – the exclusive supplier of the tetraprism lens – has been struggling to meet the number of units ordered by Apple to assemble the new camera on the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Kuo adds that the new camera component is single-handedly the “most significant supply bottleneck” of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, causing its shipping estimates to slip back as far as November.
Largan’s production yields are said to be poor so far due to Apple’s tight tolerance specifications, and the company has been forced to “urgently” boost production capacity to overcome the number of defective lens units, adds Kuo. To meet the sudden production boost and tighter tolerances, Largan is now charging Apple 20% more per lens unit.

Kuo finally reiterates that Apple will expand its new periscope lens to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro next year alongside the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Apple’s stringent tolerances for its components could prove to be an “entry barrier” for Genius – the company’s second-biggest lens supplier – to become another tetraprism lens manufacturer alongside Largan, which is strongly expected to remain the primary supplier in 2024.
