The iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are equipped with an Action Button, replacing the iconic Ring/Silent switch that had been an icon of the iPhone design for over a decade. With the Action Button, users now have a physical button on their iPhone to trigger a wide range of actions.
On iOS 17.0, Apple offers the following options for the Action Button that users can choose from. The most powerful option from the list is Shortcut. With the Shortcut option, users can select any shortcut that automatically runs when the Action Button is pressed — opening the doors for nearly unlimited possibilities.

From the nine actions Apple currently offers, the company plans to add a tenth one later this year. In an update to iOS 17 later this year, Apple will add a Translate action to the Action Button. Marketing images from Apple’s website depict a translate UI opening within Dynamic Island, making it easy for users to translate a conversation happening in real-time using the Translate app.

Apple says the Translate option will be added in an update “later this year,” likely referring to iOS 17.1, which is set to be released in October. iOS 17.1 will be the first major update to iOS 17 following its public debut last week. It is expected to bring Apple’s new Journal app, AirDrop over WiFi and other features not part of the initial iOS 17 release.
