Apple today dropped the first round of betas for iOS 17.1, macOS Sonoma 14.1, watchOS 10.1, and more. Despite initial expectations, the anticipated Journal app is absent from the first iOS 17.1 beta.
Apple still maintains that the Journal app – one of the headlining features of iOS 17 – will be released in a future update by the end of this year. With Journal, users can securely and privately jot down and record diary entries of life events throughout their day complete with rich details like photos, music, audio recordings, and more.
Journal is a new iPhone app that helps users reflect on everyday moments and special events in their lives. To help inspire a user’s journal entry, personalized suggestions can be intelligently curated from a user’s recent activity, such as photos, people, places, workouts, and more, and scheduled notifications can help build a journaling habit. With the ability to lock the app, the use of on-device processing, and end-to-end encryption, Journal is built to protect a user’s privacy and ensure no one — including Apple — can access a user’s entries.

Of course, it’s not a guarantee that Journal will be part of iOS 17.1 and instead could be pushed back to iOS 17.2. Last year, Apple released iOS 16.2 in December, and it’s likely that the company will follow through with that schedule, thus fulfilling its promise of Journal making its way to iPhone users by this year’s end.
Other notable features that are yet to make an appearance in the new betas include Apple Music collaborative playlists and the new Double Tap feature for Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2.
