FEMA and FCC will test the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) on October 4, 2023, across the United States for iPhone and Android users. The EAS is a system that sends emergency alerts to radios and televisions, while WEA sends emergency alerts to cell phones.
The test will start at 2:20 PM Eastern Time. You may receive a text message on your cell phone or see a test message on your TV or radio. According to a press release by the Federal Communications Commission, the test message will say, “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, This is only a test. No action is required by the public.”.
All cell phone providers and radio and television stations are required to participate in the test. The purpose of the test is to make sure that the emergency alert systems are working properly and that people can receive emergency alerts in the event of a real emergency.

- The test message will be sent in English and Spanish.
- The test message will be short and to the point.
- The test message will not ask you to do anything.
- If you do not receive a test message, it does not mean that there is anything wrong. It may just mean that you were not in the area where the test message was sent.
