Apple has begun working on a new iOS gaming app with elements from Game Center and the App Store as part of the company’s push into gaming, according to sources who spoke to 9to5Mac.
The planned iOS gaming app will borrow functionality from Game Center as it will be based on users’ existing Game Center profiles. Like most iOS apps, it will feature multiple tabs, with a dedicated “Play Now” tab showing the user’s games, friends, editorial content, and game suggestions. The iOS gaming app will provide quick access to in-game challenges, leaderboards, and achievements.
Apple plans to incorporate games from the App Store and Apple Arcade into the new app, which will also run promotions for special in-game events and important updates. Multiplayer support is set to be a big focus of the new app as Apple has reportedly experimented with FaceTime and iMessage integration which could be in the form of SharePlay. Finally, the new app could also support mini-games through App Clips.

The new app’s goal is to make iOS gaming more appealing to iPhone users, especially Apple faces increased competition in the mobile gaming space from the likes of Microsoft’s Xbox and the Epic Games Store in Europe. It remains to be seen when Apple plans to release the rumored app, but the report speculates it could be released via a future iOS 18 update or reserved for iOS 19 next year.
