In a surprise move, Apple will acquire Pixelmator, the popular photo editing app maker behind some of the best photo editing apps on the Cupertino company’s platforms. Pixelmator announced the acquisition, pending regulatory approval, in a press release on its website.
The developer team, based in Lithuania, is behind popular apps like Pixelmator Pro, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator. The suite of apps is regarded as one of the best in the industry, offering serious competition to more established developers like Adobe. Pixelmator’s apps are exclusively available on the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and it’s hard to see them supporting Windows following Apple’s acquisition.
In the press release, the team stated that there are currently no “material changes” planned across any of their apps as they will continue to operate as normal for the time being. Of course, this will change in the coming years as Apple’s plans for the app maker reveal themselves.

Apple has struck a series of acquisitions for popular indie apps that succeeded on the App Store. For example, Apple purchased the automation app Workflow in 2017, before morphing it into the Shortcuts app as part of iOS 12 one year later. In 2020, Apple acquired the popular weather app Dark Sky, which later became the foundation of the redesigned Weather app on iOS 15.
