AirTag 2 is inching closer to a market release, as Apple has reportedly begun manufacturing tests for the updated accessory. The awaited model could launch by mid-2025 with several updated features, reports Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.
In the latest edition of the weekly Power On newsletter, Gurman explains that AirTag 2 will feature a similar design to the current model, but will include several under-the-hood improvements. The new accessory will have a better wireless range thanks to the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip introduced with the iPhone 15 lineup. This improves the range and accuracy of Precision Finding.
In contrast, the current AirTag model uses the first-generation U1 chip from the iPhone 11 lineup. Another major improvement heading to AirTag 2 is better anti-stalking measures as the new accessory will make it harder to remove the built-in speaker. Currently, AirTag emits an alert when it’s being detected moving with an Apple device belonging to a separate Apple Account.

To circumvent this, stalkers remove the built-in speaker from AirTag to suppress its alerts and prevent their victims from knowing they’re being stalked. With Apple’s rumored change, AirTag 2 might disable itself and stop working altogether if it detects tampering with the speaker or other internal components.
