A former Apple employee was found guilty of defrauding his former employer and the IRS of evaded taxes. The defendant was ordered to serve three years in prison and pay more than $19 million in damages to Apple and the IRS. The sentence was handed down by a district judge in the Northern District of California.
Dhirendra Prasad was an Apple employee from 2008 till 2018, working in the company’s global supply chain division. Prasad’s responsibilities included buying warranty service repair parts on behalf of Apple. According to the US Attorney’s Office statement, Prasad conspired with supply chain vendors to “defraud Apple by taking kickbacks, stealing parts, inflating invoices, and causing Apple to pay for items and services it never received.”
The resulting monetary damage for Apple is estimated to be more than $17 million. Prasad later admitted guilt in evading IRS taxes “on the proceeds of his schemes.” Prasad was charged with counts of mail and wire fraud conspiracies, money laundering, and tax evasion. Prasad initially pleaded guilty in November 2022.

Prasad was further ordered to give up $5.5 million worth of already government-seized assets, in addition to “forfeiture money” amounting to $8.1 million. Prasad will be required to be $17.4 million to Apple and $1.8 million to the IRS.
