Apple's first AR/VR headset mass production is reportedly underway as it nears announcement

Quick Hits
  • Pair of flex ribbon cables that fit around the user's nose and eyes
  • Image depicts sensors for potential dozen-cameras environment-scanning system
  • First official look at "Reality Pro" expected in less than three months' time
  • "Reality Pro" mass-production reportedly underway

Physical components of Apple’s “Reality Pro” AR/VR headset may have leaked for the first time today, if images shared on Twitter and seen by MacRumors are proven to be true.

The first image depicts a pair of flex ribbon cables that could extend horizontally across the user’s face. Each cable is shaped as a pair of hemispheres that would fit around each eye. The ribbon includes a smaller arc in the middle connecting both hemispherical pieces, with the arc segment supposedly resting around the user’s nose.

Another image appears to show a similarly horizontal ribbon cable with three sensors or cameras approximately spanning the width of the first arc-like cable. Earlier rumors suggested at least a dozen outward-facing cameras for environment scanning and hand-gesture tracking. Perhaps the aforementioned system is built in a three-camera subsystem arrangement.

“Reality Pro” is expected to come with a novel set of features that sets its apart from the competition. Expect an aluminum, glass and carbon fiber design, a pair of 4K micro OLED displays per each eye, two M2-based processors, a dozen cameras for eye and gesture tracking for in-air typing, an external battery pack, and “xrOS” software platform in a package that could retail for a cool $3000 price tag.

Apple’s first foray into the mixed-reality hardware market is expected to be announced at its Worldwide Developers Conference held in early June. Despite rumors yet to indicate a formidable release date for “Reality Pro”, mass-production for the headset is reportedly underway.
