One of the AirPods Pro 2’s new hearing health features will only be available to users in the United States and Canada with the launch of the iOS 18.1 update, according to a footnote on Apple’s website spotted by MacRumors.
Per the footnote, the Hearing Protection feature, which aims to limit exposure to loud noise when wearing AirPods Pro 2, will only be available to users based in the US and Canada. Hearing Protection actively monitors the user’s environment to minimize the effects of loud noises, like traffic or concerts, in real-time and up to a maximum of 110 dBA. It is integrated across different listening modes, including Active Noise Cancellation and Transparency, so users’ hearing is protected at all times
Hearing Protection is one of three hearing health features Apple previewed during the iPhone 16 event in September, alongside Hearing Aid and Hearing Test. Available exclusively with the AirPods Pro 2, Hearing Aid provides a clinically tested and FDA-approved hearing aid mode for users with mild to moderate hearing loss, amplifying sound from specific frequencies in real time. Hearing Test allows AirPods Pro users to conduct a clinical-grade hearing test right on their iPhones, with results stored in the Health app.
