The upcoming second generation of the Apple Watch Ultra will receive a major external update in the form of a new black titanium color, according to leaker ShrimpApplePro.
The leaker has “confirmed” that the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will be released in this new variant in addition to the standard color that Apple announced in September 2022. While there won’t be any further design changes, says the leaker, it is unclear whether there will be any internal changes.
Cupertino’s manufacturer initially announced the Apple Watch Ultra in a single color — the classic tone of titanium. However, the regular versions of the Apple Watch come in other colors such as silver, graphite, and gold.
It remains unknown why Apple chose not to release the first Apple Watch Ultra in a dark color, although one possibility is that they wanted to keep a novelty for the second generation. Alternatively, this decision could have been made due to durability concerns. Given that the Ultra is targeted at extreme sports enthusiasts and adventurers, it might be more susceptible to impacts or scratches, which could easily remove dark paint applied to the titanium.
If Apple launches the Ultra 2 with a dark coating, it’s conceivable that the company has found a way to make the dark color adhere more effectively to the titanium. Other possibility is they may release the watch in a dark color with a warning about its susceptibility to color loss from scratches.
Apple has not disclosed any details about the Apple Watch Ultra 2, but it is possible that the manufacturer will announce it sometime in September, alongside the highly anticipated iPhone 15 family. According to other rumors, the new model will come with 3D-printed mechanical parts made out of titanium and “notable” performance gains.
