The mute Switch is set to become a multi-function button.

Quick Hits
  • Camera housing size is reduced from previous models
  • Action button could be user programable
  • Persicope camera likely exclusive to iPhone 15 Pro Max

New CAD models show iPhone 15 Pro’s revised design with a return to physical buttons and the mute switch replaced with the supposed “Action Button”, according to a new article from 9to5Mac.

The trusted source has supplied detailed CAD files that line up with earlier models from MFi accessory makers but now feature separated volume up and down buttons rather than the unified design expected for the capacitive controls that were rumored earlier. Production issues have been blamed for the reversion to the more traditional button design.

The mute switch will reportedly still be replaced with a single button on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models and has been rumored to offer additional functionality. Like on the Apple Watch Ultra’s Action Button, users can customize the action to their own needs. It is noted however that the base iPhone 15 and 15 Plus models will keep the toggle switch for mute only, adding a point of differentiation for the Pro level phones.

The large camera bumps shown in earlier renders have also been tamed. The iPhone 15 Pro Max seems to have a slightly larger protrusion than the smaller model, which the article suggests could support the rumors of the periscope zoom lens coming to just the larger model this year.

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are expected to receive a subtle design update this year with gentle curves added to the frame’s edges, a slight curve to the display and rear glass and an expected change of material to titanium instead of stainless steel for the outer chassis. It is also expected that the iPhone 15 generation will be the first to replace Apple’s Lightning port with USB-C, following the introduction of legislation in Europe.

The iPhone 15 lineup reveal is expected to take place at Apple’s traditional September keynote later this year.
