Apple’s upcoming iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could feature a new 48-megapixel main camera sensor, following in the footsteps of Pro iPhone models. The news is according to a research note issued by Haitong International Securities’ analyst Jeff Pu and seen by MacRumors.
The main camera on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will feature the same 48-megapixel sensor from last year’s iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models while incorporating a new three-layer stacked design, according to the analyst. The new sensor structure will enable more light to be captured resulting in improved image quality.
Pu warns that the new sensor is facing production issues and yield rates have not been as high as hoped. As a result, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could face slight mass production delays. but setbacks aren’t expected to impact the devices’ availability in September.

The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max are the first iPhones to feature a 48MP main camera sensor, a massive size increase from the 12MP sensor size that was first introduced in the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in 2015. The new sensor captures 12MP images by default by combining data from four pixels into one and can capture native 48MP images with ProRAW. This process, known as “pixel binning”, helps users conserve storage space while capturing high-resolution images.
The base iPhone models could receive more features from the higher-end Pro iPhones. In addition to the reported 48MP sensor, the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are widely expected to feature pill-shaped and hole-punch cutouts, enabling the Dynamic Island like the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.
