The new display sizes are expected to remain exclusive to Pro iPhones

Quick Hits
  • iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max new displays to exactly measure 6.27" and 6.86"
  • The new 19.6:9 aspect ratio will make the displays taller but not much wider
  • Apple has kept the same screen sizes for Pro iPhones since iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • The new displays will not come to the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus

Apple is set to introduce bigger displays on next year’s iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Reliable displays analyst Ross Young of DSCC was the first to break the news, which was corroborated by 9to5Mac through their own sources. Young is doubling down on his claims in a series of tweets seen by Supercharged, revealing new tidbits about the iPhone Pro lineup in 2024.

Young claims that the smaller iPhone 16 Pro display will come in at 6.27 inches which Apple will round up to 6.3 inches. The larger iPhone 16 Pro Max will be the biggest iPhone ever with a display size of 6.86 inches, rounded up to 6.9 inches. This represents a modest increase of around 0.2 inches compared to the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, which are set to stand at 6.1 and 6.7 inches, respectively.

The aspect ratios on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will slightly change to accommodate the larger displays. All iPhones equipped with Face ID feature a screen aspect ratio of 19.5:9. Young reports that the new aspect ratio will stand slightly taller at 19.6:9. The taller display was observed earlier in 9to5Mac‘s renders of the iPhone 16 Pro Max based on leaked CADs, as Apple seeks to make the display bigger without making it uncomfortably wider and thus harder to hold with one hand.

Apple has not changed the screen sizes of its iPhone Pro lineup since the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. The company routinely rounds up its exact diagonal display measurements to the first decimal place. Per Apple’s tech specs, the iPhone 14 Pro display is 6.12 inches, which the company markets as 6.1 inches. Similarly, the iPhone 14 Pro Max display measures 6.69 inches and is rounded to 6.7 inches.

Besides the bigger display, little is known about Apple’s plans for next year’s iPhone lineup. The company is rumored to introduce capacitive solid-state buttons on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max instead of this year’s Pro iPhones after running into engineering and production issues. Apple is also expected to expand the telephoto zoom lens to the smaller iPhone 16 Pro, which is expected to exclusively be available on the iPhone 15 Pro Max this year.
