After a few days of teasing and cryptic tweets, No Man’s Sky is finally available on the Mac for download today. The game is available to download through Steam and supports Apple silicon and select Intel Macs. Hello Games has also teased “another surprise” announcement to follow soon.
Hello Games released a new trailer on YouTube commemorating the game’s launch on the Mac. No Man’s Sky for Mac supports cross-play with PC-to-Mac cross-save, Metal 3 and MetalFX upscaling for console-level graphics, optimized loading, and full controller support. The game is available for free for existing Steam players.
The game is available for immediate download through Steam and will be available on the Mac App Store soon. No Man’s Sky was meant to be available on the Mac and iPad by late 2022 after the announcement was made last year at WWDC 2022, but the deadline was missed, and Hello Games has finally released the game only on the Mac for now almost a year later and few days before WWDC 2023.

Sean Murray, co-founder of Hello Games, sent out yet another mysterious tweet ahead of No Man’s Sky on the Mac announcement. Murray hinted at “another surprise” in the not-so-distant future. The surprise in question likely pertains to a VR version of No Man’s Sky for Apple’s mixed-reality headset to be announced in a few days at WWDC 2023. No Man’s Sky could be demoed on stage to demonstrate the headset’s capabilities and could even be a launch title for when the headset is available to the public.
Murray has also sent another tweet that indicates No Man’s Sky on the Mac is already VR-compatible. The tweet is accompanied by an apple and pinched fingers emoji, likely requesting his followers to wait patiently for major VR-related Apple news.
Apple’s mixed-reality headset is expected to feature glass, aluminum, and carbon fiber in a ski goggles-like design. The headset’s dual 4K 1.41-inch micro-OLED displays will provide 4000 PPI and a peak brightness of 5000 nits, resulting in a rich and lifelike appearance for immersive VR gaming. The headset’s dual chips based on the M2 architecture will allow it to achieve robust performance and smooth graphics, especially in gaming.
The headset’s “xrOS” software platform is said to feature a home screen similar to that of the iPhone and iPad with a customizable grid of apps and widgets and a suite of 3D iPad-based apps, including FaceTime, Fitness, Meditation, Freeform, TV, and more. Users will navigate “xrOS” via hand and eye gestures powered by a dozen cameras and sensors tracking system.
WWDC 2023 will kick off at 10 a.m. PDT on Monday, June 5, at Apple Park in a live-streamed prerecorded event. Be sure to check out Supercharged’s recap of everything expected to be unveiled at WWDC.
