Apple is reportedly gearing up to accept more Mac models as part of its trade-in program. The move sparks speculation that the company is preparing to possibly launch new Macs as soon as this month, according to information obtained by MacRumors.
According to the publication, Apple is poised to begin accepting more models for its trade-in program sometime in October. While the report declined to mention the specifics of which Macs will join Apple’s trade-in program, the move is strikingly similar to changes made to the scheme in time for WWDC last June.
Just a few days before Apple’s developers conference, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple will begin accepting trade-ins for the M2 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro in addition to the original Mac Studio. Apple did end up announcing a few new Macs at WWDC, including the M2 15-inch MacBook Air, a refreshed Mac Studio, and the first-ever Mac Pro with Apple silicon.

Any newly unveiled Macs will be powered by the yet-announced M3 chip. Gurman reported in July that following the new iPhone and Apple Watch models in September, Apple’s next slate of announcements would likely take place in October and consist of new Macs. The new Macs powered by the M3 chip will likely be an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro, 13-inch MacBook Air, and an update to the iMac.
Now that Apple has gotten the 15-inch MacBook Air and new M2 Ultra-based Macs out the door, the October launch could feature the first Macs with M3 chips. October is too early for new high-end MacBook Pros or desktops, so the first beneficiaries of the new chip should be the next iMac, 13-inch MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro.

The new announcements will likely come in the form of press releases on Apple’s website rather than a digital event. Apple announced the M2 Pro and M2 Max chip in updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and a new Mac mini in January through a press release on its website and a mini-keynote on YouTube.
