Apple could equip the iPhone 17 with a significantly upgraded front-facing camera with a much higher resolution, according to new information shared by the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo.
The analyst shared his prediction in a new Medium post earlier today, claiming that Apple will include an all-new 24-megapixel sensor across the iPhone 17 lineup. The new sensor will be joined with a new 6-element lens arrangement for higher clarity. This compares to the iPhone 14 and iPhone 15’s 12-megapixel sensor with a 5-element lens, which is expected to remain the same with the iPhone 16.
Kuo also reiterates earlier reports of a significant upgrade to the ultrawide camera on the iPhone 16 Pro. This year’s premium iPhone lineup will likely be the first to feature a new 48-megapixel sensor for the same resolution as the main camera, Kuo says. The higher resolution, coupled with a larger sensor, will result in significantly better image quality, especially in low-light environments. The telephoto camera will likely remain at 12 megapixels for the foreseeable future.

The iPhone 17 Pro is also likely to be the first iPhone with an under-display Face ID and TrueDepth system, according to a display roadmap shared last year by the esteemed displays analyst Ross Young. The front-facing camera is still expected to require a screen cutout with the iPhone 17 Pro, but could similarly be embedded beneath the display a year later in the iPhone 18 Pro.
