The iPhone 17 Plus, expected to be announced next year, is now rumored to feature a smaller display than the current 6.7-inch size of the iPhone 15 Plus, according to new information shared today by trusted displays analyst and the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants Ross Young.

In a new tweet shared today, the analyst now expects Apple to release the iPhone 17 Plus with a new display size that would be smaller than 6.7 inches, a size the company has stuck with for the iPhone 14 Plus and iPhone 15 Plus. While Apple is expected to keep the same 6.7-inch screen size with this year’s iPhone 16 Plus, Young now believes that next year’s iPhone Plus model will instead feature a smaller display.

The specifics of the new display size remain unclear at the time of writing. Nevertheless, Young states that the planned screen size for the iPhone 17 Plus will still be bigger than the base iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro devices, but will be smaller than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. As a reminder, the iPhone 17 Pro is expected to feature a slightly larger 6.3-inch display that is likely to be introduced with this year’s iPhone 16 Pro. The iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro Max are similarly expected to feature a larger 6.9-inch display.

It’s currently unclear why Apple plans to make the iPhone 17 Plus smaller than the current and previous iPhone Plus generations. Historic precedent would actually predict the device to feature the expected larger display of the iPhone 16 Pro Max as Apple typically trickles down features from last year’s Pro iPhone models to next year’s non-Pro devices. At one point, Ross believed that the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus would inherit the iPhone 16 Pro’s larger displays and even ProMotion for the first time on a non-Pro iPhone.

In all cases, the iPhone 17 lineup remains over a year away and as such, very early rumors should be taken with a grain of salt as Apple deliberates with different plans and ideas for its products. It is also possible that Apple has more changes in store for the iPhone 17 Plus beyond a curious display size change.

The iPhone Plus range has historically been the weakest-selling iPhone size since the introduction of the iPhone 14 Plus in 2022. The smaller display size could be one of many changes Apple is planning to further differentiate the product from its predecessors and attract more customers.
