Apple could be gearing up to discontinue a number of iPhone models and more after the iPhone 15 is announced on Tuesday’s “Wonderlust” event amid low to no stock in certain Apple Store locations, according to last-minute tidbits from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman.
In a new post on X, Gurman reports that stock is low or has already sold out for a number of older Apple products and accessories in some Apple Store locations. The dwindling stock supply reportedly affects devices including the iPhone 12, iPhone 13, Apple Watch Ultra, and even the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Gurman adds that low stock levels are apparently also affecting accessories such as the MagSafe Wallet, various Apple Watch bands, and iPhone leather cases, which are strongly rumored to be replaced with a new “FineWoven” sustainable material.
The iPhone 12 is currently the oldest-generation iPhone that Apple still sells through its stores, starting at 64GB for $599. It makes sense for Apple to discontinue the iPhone 12 once the iPhone 15 is announced, moving the regular iPhone 13 model to take its place as the most affordable 6.1-inch iPhone. The iPhone 13 mini is still available through Apple’s online store and also starts at $599. With its discontinuation, Apple is set to bid goodbye to its ill-fated lineup of mini 5.4-inch iPhone models, which were rumored to seriously lag in sales behind larger iPhones.
Gurman also reveals other smaller details, including an unusual “merchandise reset” to take place on the evening of Tuesday, September 12 after the event’s conclusion. Apple Store employees will also be instructed to encourage customers to buy power adapters with a USB-C port, as the iPhone 15 is strongly expected to drop the Lightning port in favor of the universal USB connector. In addition, retail employees will also be directed to encourage more iPhone 15 buyers to set their devices at the store itself rather than at home or other locations.
