Google just announced the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro at its Made by Google event, and one of the biggest highlights was that both phones will receive 7 years of software updates. This is two additional years compared to how long Apple has traditionally provided software updates for older iPhones.
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will receive updates up until at least 2030, ensuring users continue to get the latest features and ongoing security patches, Google’s SVP of devices and services Rick Osterloh said today.
In addition to the long software support, the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro also come with a number of other impressive features, including new Tensor G3 chip which is said to be even faster and more efficient than the previous one.

The cameras also boast several new features, including Video Boost for smoother video recording, improved low light conditions, and more vivid, life-like colors and other features benefiting from Google’s machine learning capabilities like the new Audio Magic Eraser and Magic Editor in the Google Photos app.
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro feature the same Pixel design that has become a staple of the Pixel line. The phones feature a polished aluminum frame and matte back glass, and the Pixel 8 comes in Hazel, Obsidian, and Rose, while the Pixel 8 Pro is available in Bay, Obsidian, and Porcelain. Both models are available for pre-order today, starting at $699 and $999, respectively. With the Pixel 8 Pro, customers can also get the new Pixel Watch 2 for free.
Google’s announcement that the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro will receive 7 years of software support is a significant development. It remains to be seen what Apple’s next move could be, but Google appears to have set a new bar for long-term software support.
