The M3 chip is not expected to begin mass production until the second half of 2023, said reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo in a tweet today.
As part of his latest predictions for the 15-inch MacBook Air, Kuo claims that M3 chip mass production is “anticipated to begin” in the second half of 2023. Apple presumably also plans to begin production for the M3 Pro and M3 Max this year, as Kuo states that the M3 would enter production “slightly ahead” of the higher-end processors.
The M3 series of chips is expected to be built on TSMC’s 3-nanometer manufacturing process. The new node is expected to offer substantial performance and power efficiency gains compared to the current crop of Apple silicon based on the outgoing 5-nanometer node.

Last week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman claimed that the refreshed MacBook Pro lineup with M3 Pro and M3 Max would go on sale in early 2024. Gurman also expects one of the first machines to offer the new M3 chip – a refreshed 24-inch iMac – to enter mass production at least three months from now.
In the meantime, the 15-inch MacBook Air is expected to feature the M2 chip in two binned configurations. The Mac Pro with the M2 Ultra is also expected to finally be announced soon, with both machines potentially making an appearance in WWDC. With these machines, Apple would complete its M2-based family of processors, before moving on to the M3 chip.
