iPhone keeps your health data private in Apple’s new “The Waiting Room” ad

The ad is part of a wider campaign focused on health data privacy

Apple today released a new “Privacy on iPhone” ad highlighting health data privacy on the iPhone. Comedian and actress Jane Lynch narrates the minute-and-a-half ad and features a segment of Knives Out! soundtrack by composer Nathan Johnson.

The ad is set in an ER waiting room, as Jane Lynch describes and exposes the sensitive medical data of each person, with her narration seemingly audible to everyone else in the room. Towards the second half of the video, Lynch reveals that they have been unwillingly revealing their health data to what is perceived to be advertisers.

The final shots of the ad showcase a woman holding an iPhone, with the taglines “Health data shouldn’t be public” and “The Health app helps keep it private.” Lynch is evidently unable to know any of the woman’s medical as she opens the Health app, which securely and privately stores her health data on her iPhone.

Per MacRumors, the ad is part of a wider health privacy campaign in 24 regions worldwide. The summer-long campaign will be featured on broadcast and social media in addition to billboards. Apple has also released a white paper that provides a detailed overview of the privacy measures implemented by the Health app and HealthKit to safeguard user data.
