A recent leak on the Chinese microblogging website Weibo claimed that Apple plans to equip all iPhone 15 models with significantly larger batteries compared to their iPhone 14 predecessors, but the original source has now backtracked their claims, stating that the reported capacities are likely to be fake (via IT Home).

The purported leak indicated that Apple planned to fit the iPhone 15 lineup with some of the largest-ever batteries of any iPhone, with the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max edging closer than ever to nearly 5,000mAh. The cheaper iPhone 15 Plus seemed destined to receive a new capacity of 4,912mAh, the biggest capacity of any iPhone, and nearly 600 mAh compared to the iPhone 14 Plus. On average, each iPhone 15 model’s battery is roughly 14% bigger than its respective iPhone 14 model predecessor.
For reference, here’s a comparison between the alleged iPhone 15 battery capacities and those of the iPhone 14 lineup:
- iPhone 15: 3,877mAh vs iPhone 14: 3,279mAh (+598mAh or +18%)
- iPhone 15 Plus: 4,912mAh vs iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325mAh (+587mAh or +13.5%)
- iPhone 15 Pro: 3,650mAh vs iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200mAh (+450mAh or +14%)
- iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4,852mAh vs iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323mAh (+529mAh or +12%)
The base iPhone 15 battery appears to allegedly gain the most capacity out of any other iPhone 15 model, with 600 mAh extra capacity over the iPhone 14. The 6.1-inch Pro iPhone is again set to have the smallest battery size of any iPhone 15 model, purportedly coming in at 3,650mAh.
While it is plausible that Apple plans to fit bigger batteries across its upcoming iPhone lineup, the stated battery capacities are likely to be fake or at least far from finalized. IT Home recently updated its original article, stating that a more reliable source reached out to them to confirm the invalidity of the purported new battery capacities. The alleged new battery sizes have been circulating on Weibo since late May, according to a new screenshot provided by IT Home.
In any case and assuming no change in battery capacities, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max are likely to feature considerably longer battery life compared to their respective iPhone 14 predecessors due to the new 3nm A17 Bionic chip, which is likely to consume 35% less power compared to the 4nm A16 Bionic. The base iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus could also receive marginally better battery life due to the A16 Bionic, although its power efficiency gains aren’t a massive step forward from the A15 Bionic.
