The NBA Commissioner, Adam Silver, announced on Thursday that the league is collaborating with Apple to offer an enhanced live basketball experience through its new Vision Pro headset, according to a recent interview with The New York Post.
Silver confirmed the NBA’s discussions with Apple regarding the Association’s desire to introduce an innovative watching experience on Vision Pro. “We’re working very closely with Apple,” stated the Commissioner as he attended Allen & Co.’s annual “summer camp for billionaires” currently taking place in Idaho’s Sun Valley Resort. Apple CEO Tim Cook was also spotted in attendance at the camp.
Apple has been heavily touting entertainment in the form of content and sports watching as a major selling point for its Vision Pro headset. The company is introducing a new Immersive Video format that sports 180-degree 3D video shot in 8K resolution. Vision Pro and visionOS also come with a dedicated Cinema Environment, where users can completely dim out their surroundings and morph into a “personal movie theater.” Vision Pro’s dual 4K micro-OLED displays can also simulate a 100-foot-wide movie screen for the ultimate home cinema experience.

Apple could be looking to expand its live sports content after securing multi-year streaming deals with the MLB and the MLS. The company now offers the MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app starting at $14.99 per month, and the MLB’s Friday Night Baseball is included as part of an Apple TV+ subscription. The company has also been rumored to eye European football by securing rights to England’s Premier League.
Apple Vision Pro is set to go on sale early next year initially in the United States starting at $3,499. The company plans to introduce an appointment-only purchasing experience for Vision Pro, and availability could expand to other countries starting with the United Kingdom and Canada by the end of 2024.
