Apple plans to incorporate a first-of-its-kind hybrid lens system in the upcoming iPhone 15 lineup in addition to a wider aperture, according to recent rumors circulating on Twitter.
Twitter user @RGcloudS is back with new information on Apple’s plans for upcoming iPhone generations. Beginning with the iPhone 15 lineup, Apple will incorporate a novel hybrid lens solution on the devices’ main camera sensor. The hybrid lens system will comprise one glass element and six plastic elements, compared to the current iPhone 14 lineup with its all-plastic lens system made out of seven elements.
The lens system on the iPhone 15 lineup will also get another upgrade in the form of a wider aperture, adds @RGcloudS. The aperture will allegedly get slightly wider at f/1.7, an ever-so-slight increase from the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max’s f/1.79 aperture. However, the reported aperture size would actually be narrower than the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus’s f/1.5 aperture, the widest yet on any iPhone.

Nevertheless, the base iPhone 15 models are expected to be equipped with a stacked 48MP sensor just like the Pro iPhone models, and @RGcloudS predicts that the new sensor, lens system, and aperture size will enable the iPhone 15 lineup’s camera to capture up to 20% more light compared to previous generations in addition to more accurate color reproduction.
Looking further ahead, Apple is expected to expand its hybrid lens system to more cameras on at least one model of the iPhone 16. According to @RGcloudS, the iPhone 16 Pro Max could include an eight-element lens system comprised of two glass and six plastic elements on its main camera with the same aperture size. The ultrawide camera would introduce a new two-glass five-plastic lens system, whereas the periscope camera would come with a one-glass five-plastic lens arrangement. @RGcloudS warns that camera plans for the iPhone 16 are still early, and the purported lens upgrades could ultimately be scrapped as they are still under testing.
iPhone 15 Specs Roundup
The iPhone 15 lineup is expected to be announced two months away from now in a special event typically held in mid-September. Apple is expected to expand Dynamic Island, first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro last year, to all models of the 2023 iPhone lineup. The company is also rumored to replace the Lightning port with USB-C across the entire lineup to comply with EU laws, in addition to expanding the 48MP main camera sensor to the non-Pro iPhone 15 models.
On the other hand, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will introduce several exclusive features, including a periscope zoom lens on iPhone 15 Pro Max, significantly thinner bezels, a new titanium chassis with subtly curved edges to replace stainless steel, Action Button in lieu of the mute switch, and next-generation 3nm A17 Bionic chip.
