Following years of Samsung sticking to their circular designed smartwatches with the Galaxy Watch line, a recent report from SamMobile has suggested that Samsung is discussing bringing back a squared design for its wearable.

A squared design would be more in line with the Apple Watch lineup and move away from the design language of other companies who use circular designs such as Google’s Pixel Watch that was introduced in 2022.

This would not be the first time the company would use a squared design on its Galaxy Watch. The Galaxy Gear, Gear 2, and Gear Live all had squared designs that were later ditched following the launch of the Gear S2 which brought the now recognizable circular screen with a rotating bezel for navigation.

While the change is currently being discussed internally, there is no guarantee that this will come to fruition. Many customers have, however, taken to X to voice their frustrations with the possible change, with many suggesting that this will ruin what made the Galaxy Watch lineup so recognizable and iconic compared to the Apple Watch and other competitors.

Despite Samsung’s smartwatch efforts beginning in 2013 – up to two years before Apple launched the Apple Watch, Apple has been dominating the smartwatch industry in recent years. The company announced in 2017 that it had become the number one selling watch in the world, while recent reporting has suggested that four in five American iPhone users prefer the Apple Watch.

While many users point out that Samsung was the first to launch their watch, comparisons between a possible new squared Galaxy Watch and the Apple Watch (which has featured a squared design since its launch in 2015) are bound to happen.
