Apple today began distributing the second beta for iOS 17.5 and iPadOS 17.5 to registered developers. iOS 17.5 beta 2 comes a few weeks after the company issued the first beta to the public. A public version of this beta is expected sometime this week.

iOS 17.5 is unlikely to bring forward any notable changes to the iPhone as Apple shifts focus on iOS 18, which should revealed in two months at WWDC 2024. iOS 18 is rumored to bring generative AI features across the board in addition to design changes for what is described as the biggest iOS update in years.

As revealed last month, Apple will enable developers to distribute their apps directly from their websites without first requiring users to install an alternate app marketplace. Apple said this feature would roll out with a future update that could be iOS 17.5, and the feature was indeed present in the first iOS 17.5 beta. This feature is limited to iPhone users residing in the European Union as part of Apple’s compliance with the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Code found within iPadOS 17.5 beta 1 suggests that Apple is working to bring the expanded Battery Health settings menu to future iPad models. The new menu would enable the upcoming iPad Pro and iPad Air users to view their tablets’ battery cycle count for the first time, which Apple introduced with the iPhone 15 lineup and later consolidated into a more accessible menu with the iOS 17.4 update.

How to install iOS 17.5 beta 2

Last year, Apple introduced a new method to install betas. Now, devices enrolled with a linked Apple Developer Program account or those who signed up with their Apple ID on Apple Developer will see a new menu under Settings -> General -> Software Update that allows users to opt into receiving beta updates. Devices that aren’t enrolled and linked to an Apple Developer account won’t see the menu and therefore aren’t able to install any new beta.

We will keep this article updated with any additional changes that we find in the second beta of iOS 17.5, including references to new features or unreleased products.
