The third generation Apple Pencil is expected to be announced at Apple’s “Let Loose” event next Tuesday, May 7. With the second generation Pencil being over 2,000 days old, the new model is expected to be a big upgrade following the cheaper USB-C Pencil launched in October last year, here’s what we can expect from the future generation.

In the latest edition of Mark Gurman’s Power On newsletter, it is reported that the new Apple Pencil will be able to give the user haptic feedback while in use. This should allow the user to feel a physical reaction when writing, drawing, tilting, or even changing the input to the eraser.

The anticipated third generation is gearing up to be the biggest upgrade the Pencil has had since it first launched in 2015. Insights from unearthed code within iPadOS 17.4 hint at the potential addition of Find My support which would let users track their misplaced Pencil, much like an AirTag or a pair of AirPods.

Another code within iPadOS 17.5 beta suggests the new Pencil will gain a new squeeze gesture functionality. In the beta, the squeeze function could be used to bring up a new contextual options menu depending on the current app or scenario in use. However, this could bring other features to the new Pencil, like switching to different modes and tools like the eraser in a far quicker way than the current double tap feature of the second-generation Pencil.

Along with the all-new Apple Pencil, the Cupertino company is also expected to finally launch the anticipated iPad Pro with OLED displays and possibly powered by a new M4 chip, refreshed iPad Air lineup with the addition of a 12.9-inch model as well as an updated Magic Keyboard case with an aluminum built top for a more laptop-like appearance.
