WWDC 2024 is a few hours away, and the rumor mill regarding what to expect from iOS 18 hasn’t skipped a beat. While we have a broad picture of all the major new features of the iPhone update, smaller changes haven’t stopped trickling out during the past few days.

Like every iOS update, iOS 18 will have hundreds of small changes that Apple won’t mention on stage at the WWDC 2024 keynote. Below, we list some smaller changes iPhone users can expect to see once they upgrade to iOS 18 later this fall.

Dark Mode improvements to the Home Screen

Dark Mode was arguably one of the biggest changes to the iPhone’s user interface in recent memory. First debuting with iOS 13, Dark Mode remained relatively unchanged throughout the years. That is set to change with iOS 18, as MacRumors reports that the feature will also apply to Home Screen app icons.

According to the report, icons on the Home Screen will gain a “dark/black tint” when Dark Mode is turned on, providing a more seamless appearance especially as most iOS apps heavily feature a white background and other elements in bright colors. This change will initially apply to built-in iOS apps only, but an API could allow third-party developers to take advantage of the feature for their apps.

Multi-page Control Center

The iOS 18 Control Center is another area that will see a dramatic redesign. After earlier reports of a more customizable layout and changes to music and HomeKit controls, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reports that the new Control Center will allow for multiple pages rather than a single one unlike iOS 17 and prior iOS updates.

A paginated Control Center should allow users to pack more controls and options spread across one or more pages. If the rumor proves correct, iOS 18 will be the second update to feature multiple pages for the Control Center after iOS 10, which featured a dedicated panel for media controls with a left-swipe gesture.

Additionally, MacRumors reports that the media controls widget on the iOS 18 Control Center will have a more expansive design that includes the album cover art and other visual elements. These elements are only visible by a long press on the media control widget on the iOS 17 Control Center, but this is now set to change.

iOS 18 Compatible iPhone models

iOS 18 is sure looking to be a massive upgrade, but it’s no use if your iPhone doesn’t support it! Luckily, it seems that the update will support all iPhone models that run iOS 17, including the six-year-old iPhone XR and iPhone XS.

  • iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus
  • iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus
  • iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini
  • iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini
  • iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 11
  • iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max
  • Second-generation and third-generation iPhone SE

That doesn’t mean all of the new features in iOS 18 will run on all of these iPhones, especially the AI Apple Intelligence features that are likely to be limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16 lineup later this year.
