The iPhone 14 lineup appears to be one of the most popular iPhone generations in recent years, as a new report from research firm CIRP pegs the latest model to be the most popular iPhone sales-wise since the iPhone 7 (via 9to5Mac).
CIRP estimates that total sales of all four models of the iPhone 14 cumulatively represented 79% of all iPhones sold in the United States during the second quarter of 2023. This compares to the iPhone 13 lineup’s 76% share of all iPhone sales achieved in the year-ago quarter. CIRP states that the last time an iPhone generation achieved such an encompassing share was the iPhone 7 when combined sales of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus reached 81% of all US iPhone sales back in 2017.
CIRP’s data estimates the base iPhone 14 model to be the most popular device from the current iPhone lineup with a 24% sales share of all US-sold iPhones. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max have similar shares, standing at 21% and 22%, respectively. On the other hand, sales of the iPhone 14 Plus remain disappointing, with sales of the lower-end 6.7-inch iPhone estimated to have a share of just 12%.

A couple of factors could be at play explaining the observed data, adds CIRP. With users retaining their iPhones for increasingly extended periods, often exceeding two years, the motivation to acquire the latest smartphone upon upgrading may rise, even in the absence of significant differences between the current and previous-generation iPhones.
In addition, US carriers are transitioning from 24-month to 36-month installment agreements for iPhones, making the monthly cost disparity between an iPhone 14 and older models seems less significant. This could potentially be encouraging consumers to opt for the newer device for a few extra dollars a month.
Of course, the next-generation iPhone 15 lineup is only a couple months away. It remains to be seen if new features such as a modified design with thinner bezels, new materials, Dynamic Island across all models, and upgraded cameras are enough to swoon consumers over the latest iPhone offerings from Apple.
