Apple will reportedly include significant improvements to Wi-Fi and cellular 5G speeds in addition to increasing the Ultra Wide camera resolution on the 2024 iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, according to analyst Jeff Pu from investment firm Haitong International Securities.
In an investor’s note seen by Supercharged, Pu lays out some of his expectations for unreleased iPhones, including previously-reported details of the iPhone 15 lineup, in addition to new details concerning the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Pu reiterates previous details shared by the reliable Ming-Chi Kuo, with both now expecting the 2024 Pro iPhone models to support Wi-Fi 7 speeds. Wi-Fi 7 is significantly faster than Wi-Fi 6 and 6E, with maximum theoretical speeds of 40 gigabits per second. Apple’s most recent iPhone 14 lineup is still limited to Wi-Fi 6 speeds, and the evidence remains unclear whether the iPhone 15 would switch to Wi-Fi 6E.
Pu also expects Apple to equip the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max with Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon X75 modem, which is said to be 25% smaller in size and 20% more power efficient compared to the X70 rumored to be heading to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Beyond size and efficiency improvements, X75 includes support for the 5G-Advanced standard, which should result in a faster and more robust cellular connection compared to standard 5G. The X75 also introduces 5G carrier aggregation, in which multiple sub-6Ghz or mmWave carrier frequencies are combined for even faster download and upload speeds.

The Ultra Wide camera could be next in line to receive a significant resolution upgrade after the main sensor on the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max last year, adds Pu. The sensor of the Ultra Wide camera could be upgraded to a much larger 48-megapixel one from the current 12-megapixel sensor, which should enable significant low-light performance improvement and even ProRAW and ProRes formats when shooting photos and videos with the 0.5x zoom mode. Pu’s note was unclear whether the 48MP sensor destined for the Ultra Wide camera would also be built on the three-stacked design rumored to be heading for this year’s iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus.
iPhone 16 Pro Specs So Far
Overall, it seems like the iPhone 16 Pro could be one of the biggest iPhone upgrades in recent memory if recent rumors prove correct. In addition to today’s analysis, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro are expected to have slightly bigger and taller displays. The 2024 Pro iPhones could also adopt the solid-state buttons which were expected for the iPhone 15 Pro before apparently being canceled owing to engineering difficulties.
It should go without saying that the iPhone 16 Pro is still more than a year away from its expected public release, and as such any rumors concerning the device should be taken with a pinch of salt as Apple’s plans could always change at a moment’s notice.
