Apple is reportedly testing new desktop Macs with multiple configurations of high-end chips based on the M2, including the M2 Max and a likely new M2 Ultra chip, according to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman.

Apple is said to be preparing two new desktop Macs with model identifiers “Mac14,13” and “Mac14,14,” according to Gurman. The machines under testing reportedly feature two M2-based chips – the M2 Max announced earlier this year with the updated 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup and a new M2 Ultra chip that would succeed the M1 Ultra currently limited to the Mac Studio.

One desktop model under testing is equipped with an M2 Max chip in the same configuration as the updated MacBook Pro lineup and is said to be running macOS 13.4, which was made publicly available a few weeks ago. That configuration is said to feature eight high-performance cores, four efficiency cores, 30 GPU cores, and 96GB of unified memory.

Apple is also testing another desktop Mac with multiple configurations of the new M2 Ultra chip, adds Gurman. The M2 Ultra chip is said to feature 24 CPU cores, with 16 high-performance cores and eight efficient cores, according to Gurman. The GPU is said to feature configurations of 60 and 76 cores, with multiple RAM configurations at 64, 128, and 192 gigabytes.

Gurman states that the Apple silicon-equipped Mac Pro is designated the model identifier “Mac14,8,” indicating that the two desktop Macs being tested are likely new versions of the Mac Studio. Apple plans to start accepting trade-ins of the current models with the M1 Max and M1 Ultra chips on the same day as WWDC 2023, leading to the credibility that an updated Mac Studio could launch sooner than later.

The purported desktop Macs under testing could be one of several new Macs to be announced at WWDC 2023 as teased earlier by Gurman alongside the heavily rumored 15-inch MacBook Air. Be sure to check out Supercharged’s recap of everything expected to be unveiled at WWDC.
