Apple is gearing up to announce new products including the iPhone 15 lineup and more as soon as next Tuesday at its “Wonderlust” event, and Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman is back with a new report today discussing all the notable changes expected with the upcoming iPhone.

The report corroborates many details previously reported by other analysts and leakers, providing more confirmations of what’s in line for the iPhone 15. As expected, Apple will announce four new iPhones – iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Most noteworthy features are predictably heading to the premium iPhones, including new processors, cameras, and build materials.

Materials and Appearance

Gurman reports that the screens on the iPhone 15 Pro models will look “ever so slightly larger” compared to the base models as Apple will use a new manufacturing technology to shrink display bezels by a third. Other appearance changes include a switch to subtly curved and softer edges as opposed to the boxy glass and midframe design that the company brought forward with the iPhone 12 in 2020.

Titanium has been extensively reported as one of the key features of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and Gurman today reports that the titanium-made chassis will sport a “brushed look” that replaced the shiny and smudge-prone stainless steel on current Pro iPhones. The strong material will also make the iPhones more durable and contribute to about a 10% reduction in overall device weight. The frosted finish on the back glass will remain unchanged, adds Gurman.

Performance and Cameras

In line with Apple’s recent strategy, the iPhone 15 Pro models will maintain a performance advantage over the base devices. The upcoming Pro devices will feature the all-new A17 Bionic chip manufactured using the advanced 3-nanometer node process, along with a RAM capacity increase that presumably will stand at 8GB. Gurman touts improved battery life as a key new feature of the iPhone 15 Pro due to the energy efficiency gains of the A17 chip. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus will carry last year’s A16 Bionic chip.

Cameras are expected to receive significant improvements on all iPhone 15 models, adds Gurman. The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus main camera will sport a big resolution jump from 12-megapixel to 48-megapixels, while the iPhone 15 Pro Max will include the biggest change among all four models through a new periscope zoom lens with an extended 6x optical zoom range. Apple is also planning to give both Pro models’ ultrawide and telephoto lenses “more megapixels,” though the extent of this increase remains unclear.

The Pro iPhones are poised to do away with the familiar ring/mute switch that has remained unchanged since the original iPhone in 2007. Dubbed the “Action Button,” the new button will allow users to enact quick actions other than setting the phone into silent mode, including enabling a Focus mode, opening the camera or flashlight, triggering Siri shortcuts, and a plethora of accessibility options.

New colors

Gurman also reiterates new colors expected for all four iPhones, including midnight, starlight, pink, blue, and yellow for the base iPhone 15 models; and grey, black, silver, and deep blue for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Connectivity

The upcoming four new iPhone models will undergo a transition from the Lightning port to USB-C for both wired charging and data transfers. As expected, faster Thunderbolt transfer speeds will be limited to the Pro iPhones. Nevertheless, something that all iPhone 15 models are expected to gain is faster wireless charging speeds, adds Gurman.

According to Gurman, all four new iPhones will include a new “U2” ultrawide-band (UWB) chip, marking Apple’s first introduction of a fresh UWB chip since the launch of the U1 in the iPhone 11 Pro back in 2019. This upgraded component is anticipated to markedly enhance location accuracy, enabling more precise tracking of both people and devices within the Find My app. Apple also intends to integrate this chip into the “next versions” of all its major product lines.

Improved Repairability

The interior of the iPhone 15 Pro devices has undergone a redesign to align with the updated aluminum chassis seen in the base iPhone 14 models. This redesign has been implemented to make the phone more repair-friendly and accessible for maintenance, allowing Apple to fix a cracked back glass without the need to completely swap out the midframe and back glass.
