Apple’s official marketplace on Amazon in Canada appears to have stopped selling new units of the second-generation Apple Pencil in what appears to be another sign that an updated version is imminent.

As first spotted by @iOS_App_Dev on X, the second-generation Apple Pencil is no longer available to buy as new from the Cupertino company’s marketplace on Amazon Canada. However, used and refurbished units of the accessory are still available for customers to buy and order from other resellers. On the other hand, the accessory appears to still be available through Amazon in the United States, as well as through Apple.com in the US and Canada.

The depleted Apple Pencil stock is yet another sign that Apple is gearing up to introduce a new generation of the accessory. This could materialize in the upcoming few weeks when Apple is strongly expected to announce the much-awaited iPad Pro with an OLED display alongside revamps to the Apple Pencil and the Magic Keyboard.

Uncovered code within previous beta builds of iPadOS 17.4 gives us an idea of what to expect from the new Apple Pencil. The accessory is likely to support the Find My network, making it easier to locate when lost or misplaced. Other rumors suggest that Apple is working on a new system for magnetically interchangeable tips that enable specialized tools like drawing, technical drawing, and painting. Additional code within iPadOS 17.4 seems to support this rumor as it mentions a new version of the PencilKit API, which could allow developers to offer new painting tools based on the attached tip.

The second-generation Apple Pencil has remained unchanged since its introduction in October 2018. Apple last year introduced a $79 model with a USB-C port largely aimed to replace the first-generation Apple Pencil, which the company still offers for the ninth-generation entry-level iPad.
