  • Average small developer saw revenue growth of 71% in two years; 83% growth in the US
  • Health and fitness, sports, and lifestyle apps saw their revenue double
  • Majority of new small developers are from China, Europe, Japan, India, and Brazil

A new study shared by Apple today divulges more details into the revenue growth seen by small developers on the App Store. The Apple-commissioned study claims that small developers saw their App Store revenue grow by 71% between 2020 and 2022, outpacing that of larger developers.

The independent study in question was carried out by Analysis Group. The study defines small developers as those with earnings below $1 million annually and less than 1 million downloads per year. Additionally, US developers saw an even larger growth than their international peers, with an average revenue increase of 83% over the same two-year period.

The study further claims that small developers constitute over 90% of all App Store developers. Small developers performed exceptionally well in certain categories comprising health and fitness, sports, and lifestyle. Small developers of apps of said categories saw their revenue more than double over the same period.

Around 80% of small developers operate in multiple global storefronts, with around 40% of all app downloads originating outside a developer’s country of origin. The average small developer operating in multiple storefronts monetizes their apps from more than 40 storefronts, adds the study.

The study adds that the App Store has greatly helped small developers grow their businesses. 40% of current big developers were either not on the App Store or had revenue of less than $10,000 five years ago. The App Store continues its global reach, with only 14% of new developers based in the US, and the rest joining from many regions including Europe, China, Japan, South Korea, India, Brazil, and more.
